“Doesn’t the world see the suffering of millions of Palestinians who have been living in exile around the world or in refugee camps for the past 60 years? No state, no home, no identity, no right to work. Doesn’t the world see this injustice?” Ismail Haniyeh

As the world stands idly by, a genocide is happening in Palestine. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has reached a critical point, with the Israeli government’s policies designed to destroy the very essence of the Palestinian people. The international community’s inaction has emboldened Israel’s brutal tactics, leaving the Palestinian people to face unimaginable suffering and loss. It is time for the world to acknowledge the truth and take immediate action to stop the genocide.

The conflict began in 1948 with the establishment of the State of Israel, which led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, known as the Nakba or “catastrophe” in Arabic. This event marked the beginning of a long history of forced displacement, military occupation, and discrimination against Palestinians. The Israeli government’s policies have been designed to erode the very foundations of Palestinian life, including their culture, language, and national identity.

The term “genocide” was coined by Raphael Lemkin in 1944 to describe the intentional destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. It is not limited to mass killings but encompasses a broader range of actions aimed at the destruction of a group’s essential foundations. These actions can include forced disintegration of political and social institutions, the destruction of culture, language, and national feelings, and the wiping out of all basis of personal security, liberty, health, and dignity.

The evidence of genocide in Palestine is overwhelming. The Israeli government’s policies have been designed to destroy the Palestinian people as a national group. The prolonged belligerent occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza for over 60 years has resulted in the systematic and comprehensive destruction of Palestinian life. The occupation has been marked by the forced displacement of Palestinians, the destruction of their homes and infrastructure, and the denial of their basic human rights.

The 1948 Nakba, or “catastrophe,” was a pivotal event in the history of the conflict. During this period, Israeli forces displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, destroying over 400 villages and cities. The Sabra and Shatila massacre in 1982, in which Israeli-backed Christian militias killed thousands of Palestinians, is another stark reminder of the violence and brutality that has characterized the conflict.

The Gaza Strip has been under a blockade since 2007, with Israel restricting the movement of people and goods in and out of the territory. This blockade has led to widespread poverty, unemployment, and a lack of access to basic necessities like food, water, and healthcare. The 2014 Gaza War and the 2023 Israel-Hamas war have further exacerbated the situation, resulting in significant loss of life and property damage.

The language used by Israeli officials and politicians has also been a significant factor in the genocide. Statements calling for the destruction of Palestinians, such as those made by Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, have been widely condemned. These statements have created an environment in which violence against Palestinians is not only tolerated but also encouraged.

The international community has been slow to respond to the genocide in Palestine. The United Nations has issued several resolutions condemning Israel’s actions, but these have been consistently vetoed by the United States. The international community must take immediate action to stop the genocide and hold those responsible accountable.

The world cannot turn a blind eye to the genocide in Palestine. The Israeli government’s policies are designed to destroy the Palestinian people as a national group, and the international community’s inaction has emboldened these brutal tactics. It is time for the world to acknowledge the truth and take immediate action to stop the genocide. The Palestinian people deserve to live in peace and dignity, free from the threat of violence and persecution. The world must act now to prevent further suffering and ensure that justice is served.
